In late October, a delegation from South Australia joined the Smart Water Mission to New Zealand led by HAS Terra Solutions, Austrade and the South Australian Department for Environment and Water. Representatives from SA Water, Department for Environment and Water, ICE WaRM and the Goyder Institute promoted South Australia’s water capabilities to the New Zealand market during the Water New Zealand Conference and Expo.
The delegates met with Watercare, New Zealand’s largest water utility, as well as Irrigation New Zealand, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research, the University of Auckland, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, the Ministry for the Environment and, Te Waka, a business-led and governed organisation established to drive economic growth for the Waikato region.
The New Zealand Government are undertaking significant wate reform with the “Three Waters” review to improve the regulation and supply arrangements of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater. This review will result in significant investment and upgrades to the current infrastructure.
The mission was a great success giving the delegation a greater understanding of the water challenges in New Zealand and identifying potential collaborative opportunities between New Zealand and South Australia including capacity development and knowledge transfer, a joint research project, utility twinning and the creation of a Regional Partnership on Water Industry Collaboration for the Pacific and Asia.
