An alliance of businesses in the business of water

Department for Environment and Water makes an impact with their Riverine Recovery Project

June 13, 2019

Leading Australian water industry companies have been recognised for excellence in technology and expertise at the Water Industry Alliance’s 2019 Smart Water Awards. In its 16th year, the Awards recognise and celebrate Alliance members for their leading-edge expertise and innovation.

The Major Projects Group from South Australian Department for Environment and Water (DEW) was awarded the Environmental Impact Award at the Ceremony on Friday June 7 for its Riverine Recovery Project.

Many years of water over-allocation and river regulation has led to a decline in the health of the River Murray, exacerbated by extended periods of drought across the Murray-Darling Basin.

The Riverine Recovery Project (RRP) aimed to improve the river’s health and the resilience of its wetlands, floodplains and backwaters in a future of lower water availability.

To achieve their goals the Major Projects Team worked in consultation with many stakeholders, forming stronger, longer lasting partnerships between landholders, Traditional Owners, local communities and government.

Glenn Shimmin, Project Leader of the RRP from the Department for Environment and Water commented that the project was a team effort.

“I’m excited for the team, and all the people who contributed,” said Glenn. “A lot of effort went into the project from various stakeholders, landholders and Government. We also had strong community support. Without the support of the local communities we could not have achieved this.”

The judges felt this project was significant as it highlighted the importance of the health of the natural water ways within the State both from the perspective of wildlife and communities whilst also delivering widespread environmental benefits across a whole region of Australia.

The RRP has taken a long-term view of riverine restoration, the legacy of which will last decades and even into next century.

Well done to the Major Projects Team in delivering outstanding environmental outcomes of national significance through this project.
