Celebrating Women in Leadership in the Move Toward Gender Equality

The water industry in Australia employs around 30,000 people with about 10% of these being in South Australia[1]. In 2017 the ABS published that the workforce gender composition was approximately 25% female. This had decreased from 30% in 2011[2].

85.4% of water industry employers reported that they were experiencing skills shortages in the last 12 months and the number one reason for this was because of an ageing workforce[3]. An International Water Association publication in 2016 argued that increasing gender diversity of the water sector may assist with future shortages in the workforce that arise from generational shifts[4].

In 2016 we saw the Victorian state government launch Water for Victoria. One of the actions of this initiative was to promote gender equity in the water sector. As of 2018, 53% of all water boards in Victoria were composed of females[5].

The above narrative of reducing the gender equity gap in the water sector should be viewed as a great success. But is this the perception? No doubt most water sector professions would have anecdotes about this news which relate to comments around themes like “merit-based promotion”. In her speech at the launch of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, former Prime Minister Julia Gillard outlined how criticism of gender equality movements are widespread[6].

Why can’t we celebrate the success of women in society without such detractions?

Why is the move towards gender equality still viewed negatively in some circles?

How can we approach the celebration of success better and engage with a wider audience?

This breakfast event will address these questions through informative and entertaining presentations from well-regarded speakers including:

Chelsea Randall, Co-captain of the Adelaide Crows AFLW team

Join us for this next installment of the Women in Water Breakfast series.
